Until the early 1950s, Cancun was a small fishing village. It was not until the late 1960s that the Mexican government decided to make the city a holiday destination in order to boost tourism in the south of the country. Today, the city is the centre of the Riviera Maya holiday area and is best known for its 23 km long beach. The name &#8220;can c&#8217;n&#8221; means &#8220;snake&#8217;s nest&#8221; or &#8220;snake pot&#8221; in the Mayan language. Most hotels and resorts are located on a headland that forms the quiet Laguna Nichupte. In Cancun there is the Mayan ruins of El Rey, an observatory and an archaeological museum that commemorates the former Mayan site. Nevertheless, it has everything to offer: pool, free sun beds and umbrellas on the beach, restaurants, free WIFI etc. We had booked an all inclusive package at a great price. Breakfast and dinner are buffet style, lunch a la carte. You can drink as much as you like all day. After complaining, we got a free upgrade to a newly renovated room. This was modern (though spartanly furnished), had a view of the sea and was really great. Wifi worked well at the bar, in the room only sporadically. La Isla Shopping Village shopping mall is just a 5-minute walk away. We absolutely wanted to see the many famous Mayan sites like Chichen Itza, Tulum, Uxam, Edzna or Kohunlich, get to know some cities like Merida or Campeche and finally relax a few days on the beach in Cancun.
