Schleswig-Holstein is the northernmost federal state in Germany and lies between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. It borders Lower Saxony and Hamburg to the south and Denmark to the north. The state capital is Kiel, an important port and shipyard city on the Baltic Sea. Schleswig-Holstein is characterized by its maritime location, the typical coastal landscapes with dykes, mudflats and beaches as well as numerous lakes and rivers inland. In addition to agriculture and wind energy, tourism and shipping play a particularly important economic role. Culturally, the country is rich in history, influenced by German and Danish traditions, which can be seen in the bilingualism of some regions.
