The Kingdom of Belgium is one of the most densely populated states with around 11.3 million inhabitants on an area of 30,688 km² and has the highest degree of urbanisation in Europe (over 95% of all Belgians live in cities). Belgium is situated on the North Sea and borders the Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg and France. Besides the capital Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Liège and Bruges are other major cities. Since independence in 1830, Belgium has been a constitutional hereditary monarchy.
