Australia has approximately 24 million inhabitants and comprises, beside the continental main land mass, the offshore island Tasmania and some smaller oceanic islands. Australia is the sixth largest country on earth after Russia, Canada, the USA, China and Brazil. The north-south extension is about 3,700 km and the east-west extension even 4,000 km. The term “Australia” is derived from the Latin “terra australis”, which means “southern country”. The capital is Canberra (350.000 inhabitants). The most populous cities are Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.
