St. Kitts is an island in the Caribbean, which belongs to the Lesser Antilles and has a population of about 39,000. Together with the island of Nevis it forms the island state of St. Kitts and Nevis, which is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations and, with an area of 269 km², is one of the twelve smallest generally recognised states in the world. Basseterre is located on the south coast of the island of St. Kitts and is the capital and commercial centre of the island state. There are three volcanic mountain ranges on St. Kitts. The highest point of the island is the dormant volcano Mount Liamuiga with 1.156 m.
