Chile is located in the southwest of South America and has over 17 million inhabitants. Chile is on average less than 200 kilometres wide, but has a gigantic north-south extension of over 4,200 kilometres. Most of the country lies directly on the Pacific Ocean. However, the country also has access to the Atlantic Ocean via the Strait of Magellan, which belongs entirely to Chile, at its southern tip. Chile is one of the most economically and socially stable and prosperous countries in South America. The most important cities of the country are Santiago de Chile (Gran Santiago), Gran Concepción, Gran Valparaíso, Gran La Serena and Antofagasta. Among the most famous sights are the Atacama Desert, the landscape of Patagonia, the Torres del Paine National Park, the Conguillio National Park, the Chiloé National Park, the historic quarter of the port city of Valparaíso and the Rapa Nui National Park on the Easter Islands, which are also part of Chile’s national territory.
