The Bahamas are an island state in the Atlantic Ocean and lie southeast of the United States (Florida) and northeast of Cuba. The approximately 700 islands have a north-south extension of about 650 kilometers and a west-east width of up to 750 kilometers. Although the Bahamas lie in the open Atlantic Ocean, they are counted as part of the Caribbean. The archipelago got its name from the Spanish conquistadors. They called the waters around the islands Baja Mar (Spanish for ‘shallow sea’), which later became the Bahamas. The two most important cities by far are the capital Nassau and Freeport. Together they are home to more than three quarters of the population. Nassau is by far the largest city of the island state with more than 200,000 inhabitants.

After the islands of New Providence and Great Exuma, we wanted to visit another island on our Bahamas trip to dive a little more into the “Real Bahamas”. New Providence is already very touristy due to the many cruise ships and the Hotel Atlantis and from Great Exuma we could not see so much, because all rental cars were fully booked. When planning our island hopping in the Bahamas we had a little research, which island could still be quite …

After a short stopover in Nassau we went further south today – to the archipelago of the Exumas. We have been told by many that if you want to experience the “real Bahamas”, you have to travel to one of the many islands away from New Providence. That’s why we put together a nice combination with Exuma and Long Island, which we will report to you in the following articles π
