The term Oceania refers to the geopolitical and cultural union of Australia, New Zealand and the entire South Pacific region (Polynesia, Melanesia and Micronesia) with its 7,500 islands in the Pacific Ocean. The term South Pacific is often used for this region as a synonym for Oceania and in a narrower sense for Polynesia. Derived from this, other terms are more common, such as South Pacific or South Pacific Island Region.
