The Northern Territory is located in the upper north of Australia and is the least populated state of the continent with about 240,000 inhabitants. The capital Darwin is the northernmost metropolis of Australia and known as the “Gateway to Asia”. Other major cities are Palmerston and Alice Springs. Some of Australia’s most famous national parks are located in the Northern Territory: Kakadu National Park with its wildlife, waterfalls and rock formations, Kata Tjuta National Park with Ayers Rock (Uluru) and Watarrka National Park with Kings Canyon. The coast of the Northern Territory is about 5.500 kilometres long.
