Thailand is a state in Southeast Asia and has about 70 million inhabitants. The capital of the country is Bangkok. The country stretches from the last foothills of the Himalayas in the north to the Malay Peninsula in the south. The maximum extension in north-south direction is 1770 kilometres, in east-west direction 780 kilometres. The highest mountain in the country is the Doi Inthanon at 2565 metres. Thailand borders Myanmar and the Bay of Bengal to the west, Myanmar to the northwest, Laos to the northeast, the Gulf of Siam to the east, Cambodia to the southeast and Malaysia to the south. The biggest part of mass tourism is limited to Bangkok and some seaside resorts on the coast like Pattaya, Phuket, Krabi or Ko Samui.
