The Maldives in the Indian Ocean consist of several atolls and a total of 1196 islands, 220 of which are inhabited by locals and 87 others are used for tourism. The chain of islands extends over 871 kilometres in a north-south direction. The islands are all only about 1 metre above sea level, which makes them particularly vulnerable to the constantly rising sea level. The highest elevation of the Maldives, at just 2.4 metres, is on the island of Vilingilli in the Addu Atoll. One third of the population lives on the main island of Malé, which is also the only real city in the Maldives and is considered one of the most densely populated cities in the world.
