Turkey is the only country in the world that extends over two continents. A small part of the country is located in Europe and the much larger part (about 97% of the area) in Asia. The country has over 80 million inhabitants and the capital is Ankara. Almost one fifth of the total population lives in Istanbul. In addition, there are other megacities such as Izmir, Bursa, Adana, Gaziantep, Konya, Antalya and Diyarbakır. Turkey borders in essence on the Aegean Sea, in the south on the Mediterranean Sea and in the north on the Black Sea. Direct neighbours of the country are Greece, Bulgaria, Georgia, Armenia, Iran, Iraq, Azerbaijan and Syria. Turkey has 16 UNESCO World Heritage Sites and numerous nature reserves.
