The country of Zambia, with its approximately 15 million inhabitants, is a landlocked state in southern Africa and borders Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia. The name Zambia is derived from the river Zambezi. The largest cities in the country are the capital Lusaka as well as Kitwe, Ndola, Kabwe, Chiangola and Mufulira. Zambia is mainly known for its copper deposits. The country became independent from the United Kingdom on 24 October 1964.
