Queensland is the second largest state of Australia and is located in the northeast of the Australian continent. Queensland has about 4.7 million inhabitants and the capital is Brisbane. Other settlement areas are the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, Townsville, Cairns and Toowoomba. The state has a coastline of almost 7,000 kilometres. Queensland has over 220 nature reserves, the most famous of which are Fraser Island (the world’s largest sand island) and the Great Barrier Reef (the largest coral reef on earth). Other highlights are Whitsunday Island with Whitehaven Beach, Moreton Island, Main Range National Park and the Gondwana Rainforests.

Our last destination on the east coast of Australia was the city of Cairns in the north of the state of Queensland, from where we had booked a sightseeing flight over the Great Barrier Reef and a three-day diving cruise.
