The Amazon is a river in northern South America and stretches across nine states: Brazil, French Guiana, Suriname, Guyana, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. The catchment area covers more than seven million square kilometres and is thus approximately the size of Australia. Most tributaries originate in the Andes. The area of the Amazon and its tributaries is called the “Amazon basin”, which is mainly covered by a dense tropical rainforest. With a water flow of about 200.000 m³/s it is by far the most water-rich river on earth (about 70 times as much as the Rhine). The largest city on the Amazon is called Manaus.
