Africa is the second largest continent on earth. It consists of 55 countries and has over 1 billion inhabitants. Africa borders the Atlantic Ocean in the west, the Indian Ocean in the east and the Mediterranean Sea in the north. The shortest distance from Europe is on the Strait of Gibraltar (Strait of Gibraltar). Here the distance between the two continents is just 14 kilometres. In its entire length Africa extends over the 3 climate zones tropics, subtropics and the temperate zones. The continent is home to an enormous diversity of plant and animal species. Among the most famous animals are certainly elephants, lions, leopards, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, crocodiles, gorillas and chimpanzees. Some African cities such as Cairo, Lagos, Kinshasa, Johannesburg and Luanda are among the largest metropolitan areas in the world.
