The island of Floreana is the smallest of the four inhabited islands of the Galapagos archipelago, has just 100 inhabitants and a small base of the Ecuadorian navy. The island owes its official name Floreana to Juan José Flores, the first president of Ecuador. The island extends over 173 km² and the highest elevations are 640 meters high. The first inhabitants were pirates who used the island as a base and hiding place in the 17th century. Later, Floreana became a port of call for English whalers.
