Beijing – Local Street Food at Wangfujing Snack Street (China)

Categories: Travel reports, Asia, China

If you have always wanted to eat scorpions, seahorses, snails, sea urchins, frogs, snakes, centipedes or locusts, you will definitely find it in Perking. In the Wangfujing Snack Street in the middle of the city center you can discover all kinds of culinary delights.

Beijing

The main Shopping Street Wangfujing

After visiting the Summer Palace we went back to the centre by metro. Last stop for today was Wangfujing Street – the main shopping street of Beijing. Here you will find many large department stores and shopping malls.

But we found the adjacent Wangfujing Snack Street, where you could discover all sorts of culinary delights, much more interesting. The entrance to Snack Street with the large gate is relatively easy to find and is located west of the main shopping street.

In Snack Street you will find in the restaurants and street stalls all sorts of local and exotic delicacies. The road is especially famous for the deep-fried scorpions on the skewer. But you can find many more curiosities like starfish, frogs, snakes, centipedes, seahorses and much more. Many of these animals are (unfortunately) alive and still moving. They are then prepared almost fresh in the fryer or on the grill for dinner…

It is really incredibly interesting to stroll through this street and to look at the most diverse “delicacies” at the individual stands. In the meantime, many stalls have already put up a “no photo” sign, as they are probably annoyed by the photographing tourists. But well, what do they expect? For us, this food culture is very extraordinary and therefore an attraction. Perhaps we should also put up such a sign at Neuschwanstein Castle or in Heidelberg 😉

Here is a short video of the skewered still living crawling animals.

Starbucks Global Icon City Mug of Beijing

We are collecting the Starbucks Mugs from the cities and islands we visit on our travels. Unfortunately, not every city that has a Starbucks store with an own mug. But if the city has an own mug we like to collect them as a souvenir. We only collect city mugs from the "Global Icon Series", which was released in 2008. You can see our complete collection here: Starbucks - Our collection of Mugs from the Global Icon Series

Did you know that China has the second most Starbucks stores after the US? There are more than 14,000 Starbucks stores in the US (as of 2018) and more than 3,500 in China. Beijing has several Starbucks stores and also its own cup 🙂

All travelogues from China

We find China incredibly exciting as a travel destination. The culture, the history, modern cities, UNESCO world heritage sites - the country is really huge and there is so much to see. So far we have only seen a small part of China, but we are certainly planning a longer trip there in the future.
