Today in Hong Kong was completely under the motto “Buddha”. First we looked at the Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery.

The location of Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery

Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery is a Buddhist temple located just north of Hong Kong in the Sha Tin district. It is not a monastery in the true sense of the word, as it does not house monks and is run by lay people. The entrance to the monastery is completely free of charge.

The path to the monastery is lined with 500 life-size gilded figures of the Buddhist saint Arhat. Each Buddha statue is individually and sometimes really funny 🙂

A total of 431 steps lead to the monastery complex, which consists of 5 temples, 4 pavilions and a pagoda. Among other things, there is the “Temple of the 10,000 Buddhas”.

The Big Buddha in Hong Kong

Next we went by metro to the cable car station of the Tung Chung Cable Car, which is located near Hong Kong International Airport. This is where the Ngong Ping 360 begins, a 5.7 km long and 25 minute gondola ride over The Chung Bay tung to Ngong Ping Village and the Big Buddha. After leaving the cable car, you reach the small village “Ngong Ping Village”. There are a variety of restaurants and shops. From Ngong Ping Village you have to climb 268 steps to get to the Big Buddha. The Great Buddha (also known as Tian Tan Buddha) is a bronze Buddha statue at Ngong Ping on Lantau Island in Hong Kong.

The 268 Steps to the Big Buddha

The 34 meter high and 250 tons heavy “Big Buddha” is the second largest free-standing Buddha statue in a sitting position and is meant to symbolize the harmonious relationship between man, nature and religion. The Buddha statue is surrounded by eight smaller bronze statues representing gods or immortals, holding up various symbolic objects in the hands in the direction of the Buddha.

After visiting the great Buddha we went back to the hotel, fetched our suitcases and at 10.10 pm our A380 plane with Emirates went from Hong Kong to Bankgkok.

Starting with our flight to Hong Kong (China), then on to Bangkok (Thailand), to the million metropolis Singapore, then into the jungle to the UNESCO World Heritage Angkor Wat to Siem Riep (Cambodia), on to Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) and finally to the island of Borneo (Malaysia).
