The UNESCO World Heritage List was first opened in 1978 and today includes 1,121 sites in more than 167 countries (as of May 2020), which are world-renowned in their uniqueness, authenticity and integrity. These are currently 869 cultural monuments, 213 natural sites and 39 mixed natural and cultural sites. The exceptional universal value of the site is fundamental to the award and registration as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In other words, a cultural and/or natural meaning that is so extraordinary that it permeates national borders and is important for both present and future generations of all humanity. The natural sites have outstanding natural phenomena or areas of exceptional natural beauty and aesthetic importance, are exceptional examples of the main stages of earth history or important habitats of biodiversity on earth.

Santa Cruz – Puerto Ayora & the Giant Turtles (Galapagos Islands)
Today we had to visit our 2nd Galapagos Island after San Cristobal: Santa Cruz. Already in the early morning at 7.15 am our ferry started from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno to Puerto Ayora, where we will spend the next 3 days.

Today we were able to sleep a little more, because our flight from Guayaquil to the island of San Cristobal in the Galapagos Islands just started at 12 o’clock. The flight with LAN Airlines to San Cristobal took about 2 hours.

We were particularly looking forward to today. Today we wanted to visit the Iguazu waterfalls, which are located directly on the border between Brazil and Argentina and have been included in the list of the Seven Wonders of Nature since 2011.

The Victoria Falls are located near the cities of Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and Livingstone in Zambia and form the natural border between the two countries. We have looked at the waterfalls, which have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1989, from both sides of the country.
