California became the thirty-first state to join the United States on September 9, 1850, and is now by far the most populous state in the United States with a population of about 40 million. California lies on the Pacific Ocean and has 1,350 kilometres of coastline. California borders the state of Oregon to the north, Nevada and Arizona to the east and Mexico to the south.
