Welcome to Mahé – our first island in the Seychelles 🙂 After we got our rental car at the airport, we drove first to Beau Vallon to our accommodation Tropical Hideaway in the northwest of the island.

Where To Stay in the Seychelles?

The Seychelles is certainly not a cheap destination in general. But holidays in the Seychelles don’t necessarily have to be expensive. If you look at the offers e.g. at Expedia, you will find accommodation in almost every price range on the individual islands:

Prices usually vary between 50 euros and well over 10,000 euros per night, such as in the Residence Villa with 4 bedrooms and 4 king-size beds at Four Seasons Resort Seychelles 🙂 We were accommodated in five different accommodations in the Seychelles and in fact in all price ranges: we had two self-catering apartments, two small/medium hotels and a luxury resort, which we would like to introduce to you in the following articles.

The tour operator SeyVillas

The Seychelles is a destination that you can book completely on your own. The district Beau Vallon

Beau Vallon is one of the 25 districts of the Seychelles and is considered one of the most densely populated districts on the main island of Mahé. From the capital Victoria, Beau Vallon can be reached by car in only about 10 minutes. A bus line also runs regularly between the two towns. The Beau Vallon area is named after the bay of the same name: Beau Vallon Bay, the longest state of the Seychelles. It is the place where the tourist development of the Seychelles really began in the mid-1970s. The “Hotel des Seychelles” was the first on the square and with this, bathing tourism developed more and more. Today Beau Vallon is a tourist hotspot on Mahé with its large number of beach hotels, guesthouses, self catering accommodation san as well as restaurants.

For six nights we stayed in the apartment house Tropical Hideaway, built in 2016, which is located in the Beau Vallon district. We felt very comfortable during our stay in the accommodation. Our room was modernly furnished, very clean and the owners and staff were incredibly friendly and helpful.

The location of the apartment

From Mahé Airport we reached our accommodation in about 20 minutes. Tropical Hideaway is located in a quiet area on North Coast Road in the Beau Vallon district (Google Maps). In the immediate vicinity of the apartment house is the famous Beau Vallon Beach. We walked from our accommodation several times on foot to the beach 600 meters away. There are some restaurants and hotels along the way, so the area is not deserted. Even in the evening there are still a lot of tourists on the way, so we felt safe at all times.

About 300 meters from the apartment building there are three small supermarkets – two Indian supermarkets (“Au Bon Valer” and “Beau Vallon Super Market”) and an ISPC supermarket, which is slightly more expensive in terms of price. There is also an ATM, a pharmacy and Beau Vallon police station. Car rental service providers and a petrol station (“Beau Vallon Petrol Station”) are also in the immediate vicinity of the property.

The house & the complex

When we arrived at Tropical Hideaway, we were warmly welcomed by Judith & Derek, the hosts. Judith showed us everything in peace in the apartment and explained so that we can get along well in the next few days. Even though we were already there around 9.30 a.m., we were already allowed to move into our apartment. That was great after the long flight, because so we were able to refresh ourselves a little bit. A deposit of EUR 100 is required upon arrival, which will be refunded at check-out, insofar as no damages have been caused during the stay.

The building was built in 2016 and has a total of six two-bedroom units. Free Wi-Fi is available. The house is surrounded by a small garden, in which there is a barbecue area and a very cozy arbor with beautiful lounge furniture. Free parking is available right in front of the apartment building. The site is secured by a wall with barbed wire and a gate, which is closed daily from 7 pm and on Sundays all day. It can only be opened at these times with a remote control, which you receive at check-in together with your apartment key.

There is no pool yet. But Derek, the owner, has told us that this will be one of his next projects 🙂

Each apartment has a size of an incredible 152 m2 and has a spacious living room with dining area, a terrace, a kitchen, two bedrooms, three bathrooms and a household room.

The living room is very spacious and consists of a seating area with sofa table, two floor lamps and a dining table with space for six people. There is also air conditioning in the room and a TV. The area is rather functionally furnished and therefore looks a little cool. In an interview, the owner said that he was gradually adding new things to the apartments, such as: recently new murals to make the apartments more homely. We had breakfast every morning on our terrace and had a wonderful view of the surroundings from here – on the one hand of the mountains, on the other hand of the sea.

As Tropical Hideaway is a self-catering accommodation, the facilities of the kitchen are very important. And it’s really perfect here, because we didn’t miss anything. Everything is available: from pans, pots, plates, bowls, wine/juice glasses to cutlery to cooking spoons – even oil, salt and pepper. For cooking, there is an oven and stove, as well as a microwave for heating food. A coffee machine, an electric kettle and a toaster are also featured. What was nice: On arrival there was a small starter package in our refrigerator, consisting of water, toast, juice, eggs, butter and jam.

What is actually always very difficult for the owner is when things break down and they need to be replaced. Some of the items were initially imported (e.g. the dishes are from IKEA), which are then of course difficult to procure on such an island afterwards. Therefore, as in other accommodations, you should be very careful with things.

In our apartment there were two spacious bedrooms:in the first room there is a double bed and in the second bedroom two single beds. Each room has a desk with chair, a chest of drawers, two night cupboardes with lamps, a mirror and air conditioning. As a rule, the second bedroom is closed if you only arrive in pairs. Unfortunately, the beds were a bit too hard for us and therefore quite uncomfortable. As a duvet there was only a thin bed sheet, which is basically sufficient at the outside temperatures. However, if you let the air conditioning run at the smallest level at night easily, it can get a little cool under the thin sheet.

The apartment has a total of three bathrooms. Each bedroom has its own bathroom with a sink, a spacious shower with storage area and a toilet. In the shower there is a dispenser with shower gel or shampoo. There is also a guest bathroom in the hallway with a small sink and a toilet. Next to this bathroom there is a utility room equipped with a washing machine, an ironing board including an iron and, if necessary, a baby cot.

Beau Vallon Beach

Beau Vallon Beachis about a 10-minute walk from the property. With its length of almost 1.8 kilometers, it is one of the longest beaches in the Seychelles – and thus certainly the most famous and lively. The beach is flat sloping and basically has a nice width. At high tide, however, there is actually not much left of the beach, because the water rises so high. On our first evening we could watch a beautiful sunset here, to which many people – locals and tourists – came to the beach.

Beau Vallon Food Market

What you should not miss is the Beau Vallon Food Market, which takes place every Wednesday from the late afternoon directly on the promenade of Beau Vallon Beach. Here you will find about 20 different stalls with a wide range of food & drinks at reasonable prices. For a main course you pay here between 4 to 7 euros. Compared to the restaurants that are located around the promenade and where a main course can cost 20 to 30 euros, a real bargain and very tasty. Individual food stalls can also be found here on the other days.
