Florida consists of the Florida Peninsula and the Florida Panhandle as a share of the mainland and is located in the southeast of the USA. The state has an area of 170,000 km² and with its approximately 20 million inhabitants is the third largest state in the USA after California and Texas. The largest cities are Jacksonville and Miami. The capital of Florida is the somewhat smaller Tallahassee. Florida owes its name to the discovery of a Spaniard at Easter time in 1513 – Easter is called “Pascua Florida” in Spanish. All in all, Florida is about 260 kilometres wide and 800 kilometres long and is also known as the “Sunshine State”.
