The island Big Island, which is actually called Island Hawaii, is the youngest and largest island in the Hawaiian chain. The nickname “Big Island” is partly due to the fact that the island is almost twice as big as all other Hawaiian islands combined. And on the other hand, it is avoided by not confusing the island with the whole island chain. Big Island consists of five large volcanoes, of which Kilauea is the most active volcano in the world. Since 1983, it has been spewing lava continuously. The base of the dormant volcano Mauna Kea extends to a sea depth of 5,500 metres. Together with its summit, which is at 4,205 meters, Mauna Kea has a total height of over 9,700 meters. On Big Island you can cross four different climate zones of the world – from the humid tropics to the cold steppe. The power of nature can be felt at every corner on Big Island – be it the active volcanoes with flowing lava in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the snow-covered heights of Mauna Kea, the lush valleys of the Hamakua coast or the deep black sandy beaches of Punaluu. Ka Lae (South Point) is the southernmost headland of Big Island. It is also the southernmost point of the 50 states of the United States of America.

Today we literally went to THE Hot Spot on Big Island: The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which was founded in 1916. The park has been declared an International Biosphere Reserve and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Sitesince 1987. The 1,348 km2 area of the park includes extensive lava fields from various episodes and is home to the active volcanoes Kilauea and Mauna Loa.

Today we went to the second island of our Hawaii holiday. We were looking forward to Big Island, because on the largest Hawaiian island we had already planned some great activities. The official name of Big Island is ‘Hawai’i’, as is the name of the entire state and archipelago. But not to confuse the two, most people just talk about Big Island.

Today the alarm clock rang again early, as our flight from Maui to Big Island with Hawaiian Airlines started already at 8.30 a.m. Big Island is the 4th Hawaiian Isel on our world tourafter Oahu, Kauai and Maui.
