New York City (“The Big Apple”) is a world city on the east coast of the USA in the state of New York and a city of superlatives. With around 8.4 million inhabitants in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island districts, it is the most populous city in the USA and a vibrant metropolis – a city that never sleeps. Every year around 50 million tourists from all over the world come to see for themselves. The New York metropolitan region is one of the most important economic areas in the world and is one of the largest financial centres in the world. The image of the city is shaped by its famous skyline with around 5,800 buildings with more than twelve floors, such as the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building and Rockefeller Center. New York has numerous architectural attractions, including 500 galleries, about 200 museums, more than 150 theaters, numerous department stores, over 18,000 restaurants and with Central Park one of the largest city parks in the world. Concerning the means of transportation used, New York City is not a typical American city, as most of the inhabitants use public transportation. There is a reason for this, as the New York subway network, which offers a 24/7 service in large areas, is one of the biggest in the world.
