Travel Reports » United States » Maui Island (Hawaii)

The island of Maui with its approximately 150,000 inhabitants is the second largest island of Hawaii after Big Island and the most popular holiday destination after Oahu. The appearance of the island is characterized by its two volcanoes: On the west side rises the 1,746-meter-high Puu Kukui and in the east is the volcano Haleakala, which is much higher at 3,055 meters. In between lies the green and fertile plain “Central Maui”, which is also the narrowest part of the island, only 15 kilometres wide between Kahului and Maalaea. Among the most famous sights of the island are the 50-mile-long Road to Hana, the up to 3,040-meter-high Haleakala National Park, the small town of Lahaina, the Molokini Crater off the south coast, the Kula Botanical Gardens, the Maui Ocean Center, the Iao Valley State Park and the surf spots in the north of Maui. The largest cities on Maui are Kahului, Wailuku, Lāhainā and Kīhei.
